RV Repair - Tips for Inexpensive RV Repairs (Part 2)

You may at some time experience an electrical shock when entering or exiting your RV. This is often caused by the wiring in the electrical receptacle that your RV is plugged into or an improperly wired extension cord. If the “hot” and “neutral” wires are reversed, your coach and you may become an electrical circuit with unpleasant or dangerous results.

There is a small polarity checker available that will eliminate the guesswork and the hazards before you plug in your electrical cord. Everyone should have one of these as standard equipment!

RV Winterizing Tip

Never simply pour antifreeze into your RV fresh water tank to run it to the pump. Even when the tank is drained there remains a gallon or so of water in the bottom of the tank and this water mixes with the antifreeze and lessens its protection level. Also the antifreeze will be very difficult to flush out in the Spring and will taint the water taste for a long, long time!

Disconnect the water inlet side of the pump and introduce the antifreeze at this point. A pump winterizing kit makes this easy to do with the flip of a valve.

RV Reminders Tip

Ever forget to lower your TV antenna or unhook your power cord?

We have all done something similar, and this weeks tip deals with one method of reminding yourself of routine tasks.

Put a labeled clip or ribbon on your antenna handle, for example. Whenever you raise the antenna, put the clip or ribbon on your steering wheel. When you break camp, the clip on your steering wheel will remind you that your antenna is still up.

Do the same for anything else you want to remind yourself of …

If you have a slide-out, hang a length of brightly colored ribbon on the travel lock bars (if your slide uses these). The ribbons will attract your attention BEFORE you try to extend the slide.

Simple but effective!

Northwest Recreational Vehicles and RVs

If you own an RV and are looking for a place to go and visit then let me recommend the Northwest states to tour. The west part of Washington State is truly spectacular and beautiful you must see Oak Harbor Island and Antecortes. The other side of Seattle is also truly incredible and the Olympia Peninsula in Washington State is a must see and you should travel around Highway 101, as well as up Hwy 112 to Neah Bay.

Then you should travel down Highway 101 to Astoria, Oregon and check out the Marine Museum and some of the restaurants too. The Oregon coastline traveling down Highway 101 is absolutely magnificent and as you travel into California and come to Crescent city, it is recommended that you turn around on Highway 199 And Drive to Grants Pass Oregon. This will take you through the redwood forest. Once you get to the other side of the mountain you should go to Medford, Oregon and then to Ashland Oregon and check out the Shakespeare Festival.

You also should go check out Klamath Falls Oregon and then drive up to crater Lake national Park. From there you should meander your way through the Cascade Mountains to Bend OR. Next, back over the mountain into Eugène Oregon and take the 99 to Corvallis and then to Salem Oregon, which is the state capital.

You should also check out Portland OR and then travel East on Interstate 84 to Kennewick Washington. From there you should take the Highway 12 to Missoula Montana then travel back down to Hailey, ID and into Boise, ID. Then from Boise ID to up to Lewiston, ID and then onto Coeur D Alene, ID and up to Bonner’s Ferry and then back to the Coast. You will be glad you did.

Get a FEMA Trailer at a Government Auction Really Cheap!

Did you know that after people live in a FEMA Trailer after a natural disaster that they have to give them back and then the government auctions them off? Some sell for as little as $1500 and therefore if you are looking for an inexpensive trailer this might be a very good bet for you? The prices actually range from as high as $8,000 down to as low as $850 but either way a deal is a deal.

FEMA stands for Federal Emergency Management Agency and there are many such auctions that happen from time to time. Sometimes they auction off brand new trailers, never used before at all. Often the dealers will bid on entire lots and take 10-20 at a time and sell for much higher prices later. Sometimes the people who live in them now can buy them outright or via the auction also. Others say thanks, but no thanks and are glad to have their homes rebuilt and want the things off the property, as they bring back horrific memories they say.

For the non-portable units however you must prove you have proper zoning to park the FEMA Trailer that you buy at auction and that you do not live in a flood zone or anything like that. Makes sense to me. Perhaps you might consider all this in 2006.

Pop-up Campers Van, Truck and Tent Travel Trailers

A family of four can sleep comfortably in the trailer, especially if the kids are young enough to sleep in the same bed.

The basic unit has two fold outs, that are used as sleeping quarters. The main part has a small dinette, a storage area and a cooking area with a tiny refrigerator. Generally there is an outdoor shower and a grilling area.

Notice a toilet is not mentioned. The low end pop-up trailers dont have them. Many people use portable toilets for emergencies and use the campground facilities otherwise.

The higher priced campers often have cassette toilets a shower better cooking facilities and some have a slide out extra room to give you extra living space. The extra room is a boon when everyone is stuck inside due to inclement weather. Remember to pack some games and toys for the kids and a good book for yourself.

Your family should have no problem eating and sleeping in the pop-up as long as you dont have to stay indoors for long periods of time. You are protected from the elements by heavy duty canvas and a metal rook.

One problem new RV-ers have with their pop-ups, is backing into your campsites. Take it slow and have someone guide you in or choose a pull through campsite.

The only other major expense you will have is the cost of the hitch, which is less than 500 dollars. The increased consumption of gasoline is minimal and your insurance and tolls for your camper is much less than it would be for high end RVs.

Our first camper was a Coleman pop-up that we bought used. We used it for two years and had a blast. It was sold to a friend when we bought a camper van.

If you arent sure about whether you would enjoy RV-ing and dont want to hassle with having to get the RV back to the dealer by a certain time, get yourself a used pop-up and I guarantee you will be hooked on RV-ing.

To get discounts on campground and RV rentals as well as RV parts you should join the Good Sam Club. The club also provides a discount RV insurance and an excellent roadside assistance program. This group also has message boards where you can ask questions and make life-long friendships.

There are dozens of websites where you can find places to rent or buy a pop-up camper-trailer. You can also look in hunting or other outdoor sports magazine want ads for used campers.

Auction sites like E-bay often have pop-ups listed either for direct sale or as an auction item. If you shop wisely you can save big money here on your used trailer.

Coleman is one of the manufacturers of pop-ups a.k.a. fold out trailers. They have been in business since 1978. You cant go wrong with one of their campers.

The pop-up actually has some advantages over the bigger more luxurious motor homes. The camper is easier to maintain and store. Also once you get to your campsite and set up, the tow vehicle can be used to go sightseeing, shopping or to visit local attractions. You cant park a big motor home in front of the local mini-mart.

Cost-wise the care, maintenance and use of a pop-up is cheaper than the bigger mobile homes. Enjoy your pop-up camper trailer.

Number of RVs on the Road Drops Due to Fuel Costs

Over the past 6 months we have noticed a huge drop in Recreational Vehicles on the road. Why you ask? Well it is quite simple really with gasoline and diesel prices over $3.00 per gallon in the United States. Here in Virginia we talked to one RV sales person who works at an RV lot on one of the major freeways. He told us he use to see one or two RVs per minute and he said now you are lucky if you see one every 10-minutes.

In Springfield, Missouri a Wal-Mart Security guard noted that usually over night there use to be over 10-15 motor homes in the parking lot and then they would leave in the morning, now barely one or two he said. Why? Well he guessed it too, the price of gas I reckon is what he said.

Indeed, it is the price of fuel and it is also showing in the fuel sales for the RV Rewards program at Flying J noted one Flying J manager who came out to pump our propane since they were short of staff that evening in when we were out West in Wyoming two months ago. He noted the many of the super nice motor homes still come in, but there are even fewer of them these days. Consider all this in 2006.

RV Winterizing - Getting Ready for the Cold

You need to know how to perform RV winterizing tasks whether you live in your RV year-round or you plan on storing it, if you live in an area that gets below freezing. RV winterizing is somewhat similar to winterizing your cabin or home if you leave it unheated. Most of the RV winterizing process deals with water and keeping the water from freezing and causing leaks in your RV. Here are some very basic RV winterizing suggestions:

For those who live in their RV full-time and choose to live in areas where the weather is cold, you will need to take some added RV winterizing steps to make sure that your water lines do not freeze. First, check to see if it is possible to heat your pipes. If not, you may need to talk to an RV manufacturer or expert to see what you need to do for RV winterizing. If you can heat your pipes, then wrap them with 110V AC heating tape and put insulation between the supply lines and the access door. You will need to run your generator or be hooked up to electricity for this to work, but it will keep your pipes from freezing.

On an RV that is stored for the winter, in order to perform RV winterizing you need to actually empty all of the holding tanks, the water heater, and the supply lines. The supply lines can be emptied by first draining them, and then putting an air compressor with an attachment on the end of the lines and blowing all of the water out.

Then, hook a bypass valve right before the water pump, turn the valve away from normal position and hook a hose on it. Pour a whole gallon of antifreeze into the hose and then turn on each faucet until the antifreeze comes out. Leave the bypass valve there and unscrew the hose. When you get ready to head out, turn on the faucets and put the bypass valve in normal position and wait for clear water to come out.

Turn off any unnecessary appliances and plug up all of the cracks and holes that an animal may enter through. Get rid of any food or crumbs.

Why Proper Camper Tie Downs Are Essential If You Have A Camper That Attaches To Your Truck

If you have a camper that attaches to your truck it is essential that you use camper tie downs to keep your camper secure. Camper tie downs are an inexpensive way that you can protect your camper from sliding or grinding against your truck while you are traveling. The number one advantage to these tie downs is basically that they limit how far your camper is going to slide or move before it is caught. This will offer you the security you need to drive without worrying about what is happening to your camper. So buy some tie downs and stop thinking of the camper falling off during your next road trip.

One of the major brand names in camper tie downs is the Torklift camper tie down. This system offers four points for the tie down to work from. There is no belly and there is no crossbar, so these tie downs can really offer one of the tightest grips possible. You dont have to worry about the make or model of your vehicle when you go buy these tie downs because they are universal and will fit almost all trucks and campers.

Some of the other brands that produce camper tie downs include: Hijacker, Happijac, and Putco Push Up Tie Downs. These companies all pride themselves on offering the highest quality tie-downs that are currently available.

Some of the tie downs will offer a better aesthetic appearance, like having chrome on the anchors or a cool design on the belly. But in the end most of the tie downs are going to work just about the same, no matter how much you pay for them. So you might as well choose your tie down based on what extra features are best for your truck and your style.

If you own a camper it is extremely important that you get a set of tie downs to help secure your camper to your truck. Even campers that come equipped with basic ties could use some extra help in securing your extremely heavy camper to your truck.

If you are looking for a great deal on camper accessories the Internet is a good place to start your search. You can find out all the information you need to know before you buy, plus you will be able to easily compare different products to see which ones will work best for you. 10 Essential Things To Bring When RVing Or Camping With Your Dog

10 Essential Things to Bring When RVing or Camping with Your Dog

1) A Color Photo of Your Dog: This is from the Expect the bestprepare for the worst way of thinking. If your dog gets lost while traveling, you can take the photo down to the nearest Kinkos and get lost dog posters made. If you dont have a photo on hand, youll be losing valuable time.

2) Pet ID Tags: Go to the nearest Petco or Pet Smart and get a pet identification tag made up that includes your dogs name and your current phone number. If you have a cell phone, use that number since you may be on the road. This way, if someone finds your dog, they can give you a call.

3) Your Dogs Regular Food: Its very important to keep feeding your dog their regular food while traveling. During one RVing trip, we fed our two German Shepard dogs a different variety of the dog food that we usually give them. Boy - was that a mistake. They both had diarrhea for days, even though we slowly introduced it to them in their regular food. After a $200 veterinary bill, I swore that I would always bring plenty of their regular dog food on every trip.

4) Plenty of Bottled Water: This is even more important than food. Keep in mind, water quality varies in different parts of the country. To prevent possible stomach upsets, diarrhea, and water-borne microbes, try to give your dogs bottled water whenever youre on the road.

5) Sturdy Leashes: Make sure you bring a strong leash with you. During travel, dogs often get lost or killed at highway rest areas. Thus, ALWAYS leash your dog before you open the car door. It always breaks my heart to see people looking for lost dogs at a rest area. Your dog is in a new place with strange people and animals all around. In this scenario, you cant predict their behavior. They could get spooked at the slightest thing. So, be safe and keep them on a sturdy leash.

6) Dog Bed: Even if youre staying at a pet-friendly hotel; a pet-friendly campground; or your relatives house; always bring your dogs bed. If they dont have a bed, get them one. This way, your dog can feel more comfortable and secure. If you have the room in your vehicle, put their bed down so they can sleep during the trip. In our RV, our dogs sleep during the entire trip on their beds.

7) Medication: If your dog takes any kind of medication, make sure that you bring extra for the trip. You may have difficulty on the road finding a vet who is willing to prescribe the same medication (without an examination).

8) Their Toys: Just as with children, toys can help to keep your dog occupied during the trip and while at your destination. It works especially well to buy a new toy just for the trip. With our last two dogs, we didnt realize, until they were three years old, that all dogs love toys. We always thought they liked toys as puppies, but didnt really need them as adults. Boy, were we wrong, Our two adult dogs now have an entire box full of toys. Every night, they each go to the box and rummage through it to find a toy for the evening!

9) Treats: Sometimes dogs can get bored or over-excited on a trip and start to misbehave. If you bring along some special treats, it can help. However, just as with food and water, dont try a new treat while on a trip. You want to keep everything that goes into their mouth the same as always. This will help to prevent an upset stomach and intestinal disorders while on the road.

10) Pet Friendly Directories: There are many pet-friendly directories for traveling with dogs, (including one that we wrote for pet-friendly campgrounds). Make sure that you bring one with you. It just makes your life so much easier to know, ahead of time, that a motel, bed and breakfast, or campground welcomes your dog. However, even though a place might be listed in a directory, always call ahead to double check that they accept your dog.

Finding the Ideal Recreational Vehicle Part

Finding the ideal recreational vehicle part means knowing a little bit about your recreational vehicle and what makes it operate the way it does. This does not require a comprehensive, studied knowledge of the vehicles operation but a little bit of background information on certain aspects of the recreational vehicle can help you find the right recreational vehicle part without much of a hassle. This obviously depends on whether or not the dealer for the part is as knowledgeable as you claim to be or vice versa. Part of finding parts is knowing where to look.

You may find yourself in need of an engine part for your recreational vehicle. This requires you to find out a few details. The first thing you should know is the year of the vehicle and the make and model of your recreational vehicle. This helps find the right company in charge of making the recreational vehicle part. From that point, you need to find out what system the part is under. In other words, is it a cooling system part or a belt or a hose? Discovering this aspect may require the help of a professional at this point, especially if you are not certain. You do not want to end up paying for the wrong part.

Locating Part Specifics

From this point, you need to locate the actual recreational vehicle part. Finding this might take you to a parts specialty store or an outlet that enables you to pick a part from a selection of parts. Give the best available description to the owner and he or she can help locate the part for you in their store. If they have a parts catalogue and you are familiar with using one, you can locate your part in that fashion. Be aware that there is a special technique to reading and using parts catalogues that may require some assistance. From the catalogue, you can get a part number and then the owner can order the recreational vehicle part.

If your part is not an engine part, the scenario for locating the specific part is a little bit different but covers the same ground. Going to a part specialty store can help locate your part a little bit quicker. Some of these stores are in the Yellow Pages or can be located by heading to the original dealer of the RV. In many instances, in fact, the RV dealer may have the recreational vehicle part you are need.
