You need to know how to apply and obtain a marriage license in the state of Georgia. Well if you are not prepared you might be sorry. So below I have listed the most recent and up to date marriage license laws and regulations in the state of Georgia.

You will need two valid forms of identification such as a driver license, social security card, birth certificate, state identification card, pass port or military ID.

You do not have to reside in the state of Georgia to apply or obtain a marriage license. Although if you are not a resident you must apply for the marriage license in the county that the marriage is taking place.

*Under House Bill 378, a qualifying premarital education program shall include at least six hours of instruction involving marital issues, which may include but not be limited to conflict management, communication skills, financial responsibilities, child and parenting responsibilities, and extended family roles. The program must have been completed within twelve months prior to the application and the couple must have undergone the premarital education together. You should contact your local county clerk for more information.

The couple to wed must apply for the license in person and together.

If you have been divorced with in the last six months you must provide a divorce decree.

Their are no waiting period for your license in the state of Georgia.

You must pay $65.00 if you did not take the premarital education. If you did take the premarital education courses you pay $30.00 for your marriage license.

Blood tests are no longer required in the state of Georgia.

If you are 16 or 17 years old, you may apply if accompanied by both parents who have given written consent. If the bride is pregnant, no parental consent is required if you submit a statement from a licensed physician certifying that the bride is pregnant. If you are under age and already have a child together you will need to provide a birth certificate of the child.

Their are no proxy marriages.

Their are cousin marriages.

Their are common law marriages.

Any minister who is authorized by his or her church may perform marriages. The ministers must completer the marriage certificate and return it to the ordinary with in 30 days of the marriage.

On your wedding day there are many kind and loving words spoken. Promises are declared. Vows are made. Congratulatory well wishes flow. This is how it should be. It is a day to celebrate love. There are, however, three words among all that are said, essential for a growing, deepening, and intimacy filled marriage.

Your first thought might be these words are, I love you. Certainly those are important words not to be taken for granted or spoken flippantly. But love can be a fickle thing. Sometimes we feel loving, sometimes we do not. Sadly, many who fall in love, fall out of love as well.

The three essential words I have in mind, implicit in the wedding vows you exchange, are in the form of a question: Do . . . you . . . choose? It is a moment of truth question that will be repeated more often than you might think.

I wish I could say the vows you make on your wedding day will be sufficient to last a lifetime. They are not. Promises are not easy to sustain. A growing marriage requires we answer the question, Do you choose? on a daily basis. Today, Do you choose? may mean negotiating your needs with respect, not seeking to have your needs met at someone elses expense. Tomorrow, Do you choose? may mean risking confronting, apologizing, or forgiving. And the day after that, Do you choose? may mean putting your partner above all other distractions and temptations the world has to offer. You will answer this essential question over and over and over again by your actions, for by such choosing the very foundation of your marriage will be strengthened.

I have met many people committed to the institution of marriage. They choose to be married. They dont want to be single, or be a divorced parent, or partition their wealth, or do their own laundry, or be alone on Saturday night. They may even be afraid not to be married. In that sense, they are committed to marriage. But notice these are all self-serving reasons. One or both partners remain in their marriage primarily for what it provides them. Somewhere along the line, one or both partners wavered in their commitment, choosing themselves more than the other. Eventually, life gets sapped out of such marriages and they wither, need deprived and bitter with resentment. Love is not selfish, it does not seek its own way, the Apostle Paul reminded us. There is an enormous difference between being committed to being married for what marriage provides you, and being sacrificially committed to the wellbeing of your spouse. For marriage to thrive, this commitment to the other must be mutual. No one can choose for the other or for both. That is why your wedding vows are repeated each to the other.

Choosing your spouse daily is about mutual sacrifice. Intimacy is about mutual need satisfaction. Answering, Do you choose? means making sure your partner feels heard, even before you speak. It means assuring they are safe and valued and affirmed and loved and most essentially, chosen.

THE WEDDING CAKE as we know it goes back to the Roman Empire where cakes were actually barley bread. The groom would partially eat the loaf and then break the rest over the brides head. This symbolized his dominion over her, and the crumbs that fell to the floor symbolized good luck and fertility. It was good luck as well for the guests to eat the crumbs, and single women went after crumbs to ensure their own future marriages. The breaking of the bread over the brides head was phased out over time, though there were still reports into the 19th century that oatcakes were broken over brides heads in Scotland. In Northern Scotland, bridesmaids put a napkin over the brides head and poured a basket of bread over her to symbolize fertility and good fortune.

During the middle ages, cakes were simply flour-based breads or biscuits. It was the guests duty to each bring a small cake to the ceremony. The cakes were piled up on top of each other between the bride and groom. Should the bride and groom succeed in kissing over the pile, they would have good luck in their marriage. The small, bland cakes evolved into dense fruitcakes baked well in advance of the wedding and soaked in spirits for preservation.

Flowing out of this tradition came the brides pie, making its appearance in the 17th century. The pie was made of anything from mince meat to mutton to sweetbreads. For poorer families, this pie made up a centerpiece of the wedding meal. A main ingredient of any pie was a glass ring. The woman who found the ring would be the next to be married - a tradition replaced by the throwing of the bouquet today.

By the late 19th century, sugar was more widely available and the wedding cakes familiar to us began to take shape. The first known wedding confection cake appeared in 1859 and commemorated the marriage of one of Queen Victorias daughters. However, even with this cake, only the bottom layer was actual cake. The top tiered layers, which are reportedly inspired by the spire of the St Mary-le-Bow church in London or simply a throwback to the stacked cakes of yore, were made of spun sugar. Despite the fake upper layers, the Victorian era gave rise to the elaborately decorated cakes that we know today, with the flourishes of color, sugar and figures were used to seeing. It is even said that Queen Victoria herself had a cake weighing over 300 pounds!

Queen Victoria is also credited with popularizing white in a wedding to symbolize purity. White icing on wedding cakes became traditional during this time. Even before this specific symbolism, cakes were white simply because ingredients for the cakes were hard to come by, especially the sugar used in the icing. The whiter the sugar, the more refined, and therefore the more affluent the family appeared. So, the white wedding cake was originally a symbol of affluence rather than purity.

As the architecture of the cake evolved, the columns that traditionally decorated a royal cake became support columns for the upper tiers which could then be made of actual cake. Thus was born the tiered wedding cake. Often the columns were disguised broom handles serving as the true support for the weighty confections. The frosting of a cake has several possible origins. One possibility is that in the seventeenth century, a French pastry chef frosted the cake tower with sugar to ensure the buns kept their form. Another possibility is that because a lack of refrigeration would spoil the cake, a dense layer of sugar and fat would help preserve it as well as feed all the people attending the wedding.

As the tiered cake evolved, so did the symbolism behind it. Starting in the 17th century, it was thought that sleeping with a piece of cake under ones pillow would help them dream of their future spouses. This idea led to the tradition of brides passing crumbs of their cake through their rings and distributing them to guests who could place the crumb under their pillow. This tradition tapered off after the superstition of never removing ones wedding ring after the ceremony appeared.

At this time, the three tiered cake became traditional. The first layer is for the reception, the second layer for distributing to guests, and the third is saved for the anniversary, leading us to another popular tradition: freezing the top tier of the cake and sharing it on the couples first wedding anniversary. Another take on this tradition is that the tier is unfrozen and eaten at the christening of the first child. It was assumed that this event would happen soon after the wedding, so the event would share the cake from the wedding. However, as couples waited longer after marriage to have children, the notion of saving the top tier for the christening tapered off.

The wedding cake has a rich herstory, but luckily in this day and age, you can have whatever size, style and flavor of cake your wedded heart desires.

For many centuries numbers have been associated with successful marriages. In China the number 8 is considered the most successful day to have a wedding. If the number is the eighth day of the eighth month in a year ending in eight, it is considered to be even better. This year the number is 7/7/07 for a successful marriage. In some societies if the wedding is conducted on the number 4, it is considered doomed to failure.

In reality numbers can be associated with successful marriages. For example, one stands for unity in marriage. It represents the coming together of a man and woman in holy matrimony to begin a new family unit as one. In religions of society, the number one is associated with God who was the originator of Holy matrimony. A couple that starts their marriage based upon shared faith and beliefs is more likely to be successful.

In marriage the number two represents the union of two people-a man and a woman. As two individuals, they take vows to live together permanently. In the ceremony they have at least two witnesses who can testify that they have promised to remain together until the death of one of them.

Three represents the three-way tie of Christ, the bride and groom. A rope that is braided with three strands is considered the strongest. In a Christian marriage, success is more likely when it is centered on Christ.

Four stands for the things in society that can rip the marriage into fourths. Excessive spending through credit card debts, careers, and health issues or family changes are causes for problems in marriages. Discuss expenditures and incomes. Plan a budget; pay for credit charges as soon as the bill comes, never charge more than you can pay. Avoid his and her bank accounts. Establish joint bank accounts; save for a rainy day. Talk about job opportunities and pray about the best situation for your family. When health becomes an issue seek professional counseling and guidance. Try to understand each other when the family size changes. Maybe the loss of family member is causing strain on the marriage. Speak about how you feel to each other and to God. Communication is the key to overcoming many of these issues. Avoid dividing your marriage into me, myself, I and them.

Five represents the phases of marriage that can affect the success. There is the honeymoon period. This is the time of becoming intimate, the blending of your personalities, learning to share and living on love. The next phase is when the first child comes. This brings about a new relationship of sharing time and energy. The third phase is when the first child starts to school. This family change is sometimes difficult to accept, especially when the parents are closely knit to the child. Mother may not want to let the child go of her apron strings that may cause a problem with the father or vise versa. The empty nest syndrome is when the last child leaves home. The retirement phase or stage is often a harder adjustment. Fixed or reduces incomes, changes in routines, lack of hobbies or disagreement over free time, even choices of foods can affect the lifestyle. The unwillingness to adjust brings on choices to separate and try to start over in marriage. Yet the couple that recognizes the five phases of marriage and learns to adapt will find their way to a successful marriage.

Six is associated with labor and hard work. A successful marriage takes a lot of hard work. It has been said marriages may be made in Heaven, but they must be worked out on Earth. Success requires recalling what brought you together in the beginning. It means you must keep the seed of love blooming by remembering your spouse on special occasions. Try placing a note in his briefcase that says: I love you. Send her a red rose for no reason. Pack a photo of yourself in the suitcase. Call and leave a message: Im thinking of you right now. Say a special prayer for your spouse. Remember it takes a lifetime to make a marriage successful.
